Hot Weather Tips for Your Pet

The Heat

Animals can die from Heat Prostration or Overheating.

So you must never leave you pet in a car even if the windows are down the temperature can quickly climb and become excessive in a short period of time. Parking in the shade does little to lower the temperature either. Also, make sure you have plenty of water available if you are traveling with your pet.

Exercising your dog can be a challenge in the summer too. So never exercise them in the heat of the day. Either walk them during the early part of the day or in the late evening. Make sure the surface you are walking on does not burn their feet by just putting your hand on it. If it is too hot for your hand certainly it is too hot for their feet. The same things goes for playing with them outdoors. You can always play with them indoors.

The Pool

If you have a pool and I am talking about a large pool you need to be careful your dog does not fall in and drown. NOT all dogs can swim and when they fall in they may become panicked and drown.

You need to teach them where the stairs are so they will know how to get out if they fall in. If you are sure they can't swim then you need to take precautions so they are not left alone around the pool.

If your dog is afraid of the water you can try using a life jacket made for dogs. Once they get used to moving around in the water and feel secure remove the jacket and see if they will swim on their own. Many dogs love water but just as many don't so forcing them is not the answer.

They also make ramps for dogs that attach to the side of the pool and make it easier for them to get out of the pool. They make stairs that can attach to a boat so dogs and get in and out easily. If you take the time to teach them how to get in and out it will make the transition more easily for the dog.

I like the idea of a kiddie pool. Most of the stores carry them in the summer for children but I find they work really well for the dogs, too. It gives them something to play in and you don't have to worry about them drowning. Just fill it up with water and let them investigate it on their own.

Fleas

Well if you live in Florida you have to give your dogs flea medications and heartworm medications the year round. There is hardly a time when it gets cold enough to kill all the fleas and mosquitos.

There are so many types of medications out there now there is no reason not to and your dog will thank you for it.

Most of all be careful and have a great summer.
